About Us

Motherhood Village Ltd is the Gold Coast’s first and only established peer-led perinatal mental health charity, proudly founded by a local mother with lived experience of perinatal mental health challenges. Recognised in the Queensland Parliament in June 2025 for our vital community work, we are the region’s original and leading provider of grassroots, lived-experience perinatal mental health peer support.

We specialise in free, in-person mental health peer support group sessions designed for mothers and parents navigating the complexities of perinatal mental health. Our services offer a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space for parents who are facing perinatal mental health challenges, experiencing difficulties during the postpartum period, or simply feeling isolated and overwhelmed.

Known for our quality of care, we take great pride in our village approach—offering connection, validation, and support through every stage of the perinatal journey. Every session is facilitated by a trained peer support worker with lived experience of perinatal mental health, trained through the MMHA, COPE and PANDA frameworks, ensuring an authentic, empathetic, and professional service that complements clinical care.

Our work fills a critical gap between clinical services and community support. We collaborate closely with trusted Gold Coast perinatal care partners such as the Lavender Unit at Gold Coast University Hospital, perinatal psychologists and psychiatrists, general practitioners, and women’s health providers. Together, we ensure parents receive wraparound, continuous care throughout pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenting—aligned with the First 2000 Days framework.

We are deeply embedded in the local community, built by Gold Coasters, for Gold Coasters, and we are proud to be a trusted referral option for hospitals, health professionals, and community organisations alike.

Our commitment is simple but powerful: no mother should suffer in silence. We are here to catch and support every mother and parent in their own unique journey—because every parent deserves a village.

Mission & Vision

Our Vision

To provide accessible perinatal mental health peer support on the Gold Coast, with a focus on a peer-led, lived experience model of support, helping improve the mental health and wellbeing of parents and their families.

Our Mission

1

To provide accessible, in-person, perinatal mental health peer support to mothers and parents, who are facing perinatal mental ill health, or who may be finding the perinatal period challenging and need community support.

2

To complement the care provided by existing Gold Coast perinatal clinical care facilities such as the Lavender Unit GCUH, Perinatal Psychologists & Psychiatrists, General Practitioner’s and Women’s Health Clinicians. Ensuring parents feel supported throughout the perinatal period and early parenthood years, using the first 2000 days framework to ensure we meet the needs of those families in need of both clinical and peer support.

3

To provide educational resources for families seeking support during the perinatal period, and enhance community knowledge on the signs and symptoms of perinatal mental ill health.

4

To recruit and train a diverse group of peer support workers with lived experience of perinatal mental ill health. Encompassing peer support skills, mental health literacy, cultural sensitivity, identification of at-risk parents and how to refer on to clinical support.

5

Ensure the sustainability and growth of the charity through effective fundraising and financial management.

Our Motherhood Village Team

  • Renee Rekes

    Peer Leader

Renee is our wonderful Peer Leader, who leads our Perinatal Mental Health and Village Art Support Groups.

Renee pursued a career working in mental health after gaining experience by facilitating art programs for a community based mental health service. However after navigating her own perinatal mental health challenges after the birth of her first child, Renee developed a passion for wanting to support other mothers navigating similar struggles with their mental health.

After the birth of her third child, Renee became a medical mum overnight as her daughter faced significant health challenges, all while raising three children under four without the village she needed. This deepened her own mental health struggles and strengthened her resolve to support others. She became a certified Doula, working closely with at-risk and marginalised mums, drawing on her own experience to ensure others never felt alone. Now on the Gold Coast, Renee uses her lived and professional experience as a Peer Leader to support mothers at Motherhood Village.

  • Sophie Duffy

    Peer Leader

Sophie is a mum to two beautiful girls and is a amazing addition to the Motherhood Village team.

‘I experienced perinatal mental health challenges with my first daughter and spent the first 6 weeks of her life in a mother baby unit.

As part of my recovery, I had a deep desire to help other mum’s going through similar challenges and wanted to advocate and raise awareness for perinatal mental health. I did this through volunteering for PANDA and sharing my story to help others feel less alone.

I am a primary school teacher with a passion for the social emotional development and mental wellbeing of children, and in order to foster this, I believe we need to look after and support the mental health of parents. I am a registered Circle of Security Parenting and Classroom Facilitator and love leading these groups to support and foster a secure attachment between parents and their children, all while honouring the mental wellbeing of both.

  • Hannah & Tessa - Imrie & Noah's Mums

    Red Nose Peer Leaders

Meet Hannah and Tessa - our beautiful mums who lead our Grief and Loss Bereavement Support Group for Red Nose at Motherhood Village.

Hannah has volunteered within the loss community after losing her daughter Imrie in 2022. She volunteers for Red Nose, Heartfelt and Precious Wings. In her spare time, you will find her adventuring outdoors and making memories with her beautiful family.

  • Robyn Ross

    ‘Resident Grandma’ Volunteer

Robyn is a favourite with many of our mothers and their babies attending our Village Art support groups. You will find her regularly at our Miami Village Art location, and we love having her as one of our ‘Resident Grandma’s!

Hi I’m Robyn, mum, grandmother, foster carer. I’ve always loved being with my babies even when I wasn’t much more than a baby myself.

Professionally I’ve worked with children with disability, early childhood, teacher with all age groups, case worker in Foster Care and various others.

  • Kaitlan Carr

    ‘Resident Grandma’ Volunteer

Another crowd favourite with our mums and their babies - You will find this beautiful soul helping volunteer as our Resident Grandma at our Miami Village Art support groups.

Kaitlan is a mum who loves deep chats, salty air, and spending time with her family.

  • Julia Wicker

    ‘Resident Grandma’ Volunteer

Julia is a mum to a lively toddler and one of our Resident Grandmas at our Isle of Capri location. She brings warmth, care and a nurturing presence to every child she supports.

  • Georgia Moore

    ‘Resident Grandma’ Volunteer

You’ll find Georgia at our art support groups, quietly caring for the little ones while their mums take time to reflect, create, and connect.

Georgia has a background in psychology and a big heart for supporting women through the challenges of early motherhood. With a calm presence and thoughtful approach, she helps hold the space for mums to focus on themselves, knowing their babies are cared for.

She’s passionate about women’s mental health and is grateful to be part of a village that reminds mothers they don’t have to do it alone.
